Collider update

By Christopher Ozdarski, September 21, 2008

Some of you know that I’ve been jokingly obsessed about the possibility of a black hole destroying the earth since March of this year when an article appeared in The New York Times about the particle accelerator being built in Switzerland.  (Click here to read that March article.)

Well, earlier this month they finally completed construction and turned the thing on.  About 36 hours into the experiment – before ever colliding actual particles – the damn thing broke.  Now, before you start muttering about $10 billion being pissed away… they can fix it.  But it will take a few months.

My response to this news?  “Faulty mechanical connection” MY ASS.  I’m guessing a black hole ate a piece of the accelerator causing the damage.

Actually, they didn’t even get around to colliding particles because they were still callibrating the equipment.  So they couldn’t have created a black hole.  (So they SAY.)

Apparently our doom has been delayed.  Stay tuned.

Christopher
